In an interview with What To Watch earlier this year, Zombie did note that he didnвЂ™t feel as if the MPAA-enforced cuts hurt the overall film or compromised his vision. So what gives? And how different was the NC-17 cut?ДЄll we really know about the so-called unrated cut of 31 is that it was rated NC-17 for вЂњ sadistic graphic violence, bizarre sexuality/nudity, pervasive disturbing images, and some strong language.вЂќ Presumably, that cut of the film was much more graphically violent than the R-rated cut, which often seemed to skirt around the violent bits with quick cuts and off-screen kills. The original cut of the film, slapped with an unreleasable NC-17 rating, screened at Sundance but hasnвЂ™t been seen or heard from since. As we reported back in January, Zombie did indeed make that promiseвЂ¦ The 103-minute version of the film is the cut that Zombie trimmed down in order to get an R-rating from the MPAA вЂ“ he submitted the film several times before they gave him what he needed вЂ“ which would be fine if we hadnвЂ™t been promised the unrated cut of 31 on home video. It subsequently hit VOD outlets and, as of this past Tuesday, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.Д«ut as many fans have discovered, the version of 31 that hit DVD and Blu-ray is the very same cut that was released into theaters. ZombieвЂ™s seventh feature took its sweet time getting to us, and was finally released into limited theaters this past summer. Like him or not, it's hard for any horror fan to simply ignore him.It may not be popping up on too many year-end вЂbest ofвЂ™ lists, but Rob ZombieвЂ™s 31 was undoubtedly one of the most hotly-anticipated horror movies of 2016.

He makes movies that crawl under your skin whether you want them to or not. I'm no fan of his most recent film, Lords of Salem, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it more often than horror movies that I actually enjoyed. He doesn't take half-measures and he doesn't water down his vision, even when that vision is about as wrongheaded as you can get (like his remake of Halloween and its totally-off-the-rails sequel). To Zombie's credit, he's one of those horror directors whose style instantly announces itself the moment you see it. His work is divisive, to say the very least.

And if you've seen one of Zombie's movies, you probably know whether or not this will be your cup of tea.

If you've seen one of Zombie's movies before, you should already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this trailer, which definitely feels like a greatest hits collection of his filmography to date.

There are twisted clowns and bizarre monologues and a '70s setting and outrageous costumes and preposterous character names ('Father Napoleon-Horatio-Silas Murder') and Sheri Moon Zombie wearing skimpy outfits and, most importantly, lots and lots of long, scraggly beards. Now that the first trailer for the film has arrived, it officially looksВ like Rob Zombie-est Rob Zombie ever made, collecting all of his familiar tics and aesthetic choices under own bloody, grungy umbrella. On paper, 31 sounds like the Rob Zombie-est Rob Zombie movie ever made: a group of random people are abducted and forced into a twisted game where they must survive being hunted by murderous clowns for twelve hours.
